I’ve created a roundup of some beautiful free self striping yarn knitting patterns. Of course, you can always browse the massive archive of free patterns on Ravelry to find more free self striping yarn knitting patterns. Many of these patterns are by established designers, so they shouldn’t have errors and should be well written. However, I have not tested them, so always check for errata to prevent future headaches!
Trying out a designer’s free pattern is a good way to get to know how the designer writes, so if you like his or her instructions and methods, you might feel more comfortable purchasing another pattern of theirs. Also, it is really easy to buy patterns on Ravelry!
From top to bottom, left to right:
Cleome by Berroco Design Team
Berroco has several free patterns that showcase their wonderful yarn! Cleome uses two colourways of self-striping DK-weight cotton yarn and intarsia to create a subtle and stylish zig zag. It’s a beautiful tee for summer! The pattern includes nine sizes, from a bust of 91.5 cm (36″) to 172.5 cm (68″). Depending on what size you knit, you’ll need between 869 – 1737 m (950 to 1900 yards) of yarn.
Joyce Cardigan by Andi Satterlund
Andi Satterlund designed the Joyce Cardigan for Knit Picks using their self-striping, fingering-weight yarn. The Joyce Cardigan is designed with four intarsia panels on each front and seven intarsia panels on the back, all of varying widths that are narrow enough that the self-striping yarn can do its magic and create neat, horizontal stripes. It features a classic, simple shape with ¾-length sleeves, a crew neck, and a straight fit that won’t compete for attention with busy yarns. The pattern includes ten sizes, from a bust of 83.5 cm (33″) to 175.25 cm (69″). Instead of using multiple balls of the same self-striping colorway, the panels can also be knit using a different solid color for each panel or a mixture of self-striping and solids, or the panels can be eliminated entirely to make a simple, light cardigan. I definitely want to knit myself this gorgeous cardigan!
Piilu by Berroco Design Team
Self-striping yarns somehow makes entrelac even more awe-inspiring! The Piilu pattern includes nine sizes, from a bust of 94 cm (37″) to 175.5 cm (69″). The pattern calls for a DK-weight cotton yarn, but I’m sure a wool one would make this summer sweater warm enough for autumn or winter.
Easy Peasy Socks by Karolina Adamczyk
Karolina Adamczyk designed the Easy Peasy Socks as a beginner-friendly project in colourwork knitting. The stranded pattern is easy to knit, with only two colours in one round and no more than three stitches of one colour pass. The socks use one solid colour (here is white) and then a self-striping yarn as the contrast. Somehow the colour changes in the colourwork stitches just look so magical! The pattern is available in English and Polish.
ZickZack Scarf by Christy Kamm
The ZickZack Scarf by Christy Kamm is a gorgeous scarf in the design of Missoni! The scarf alternates two colourways of self-striping fingering-weight yarn in a zig-zag, garter stitch pattern. I can imagine this is a great project for TV knitting, as you just repeat the pattern until your yarn runs out! The pattern is available in ten languages.
Easy Mosaic Socks by Winwick Mum
This pattern is worked with two yarns but only one at a time and uses slip stitches to create the mosaic pattern across the sock. It’s surprisingly easy, and this free pattern with photo tutorial will help you get the hang of it in no time! Like some of the other patterns in this roundup, the Easy Mosaic Socks use one strand of a solid Main Colour, and one self-striping Contrast Colour to create a beautiful contrasting pattern.
Candy Stripe Cowl by Gianna Mueller for Purl Soho
Here’s another neck accessory using garter stitch! This cowl uses two alternating colourways in a garter stitch pattern to make a simple yet stunning piece. The Candy Stripe Cowl in one size and uses 260 m (285 y) of sport-weight merino-silk yarn. However, I’m sure you could add more yarn to make an even longer cowl, just knitting more garter stitch flat before working the decreases. This pattern calls for Purl Soho’s Novella yarn, which isn’t just self-striping, but also marled, for even more colour! Check out the many other free patterns by Purl Soho!
Utsubo Sock by Chiharu Nagase
Chiharu, the designer is a compassionate caregiver for the elderly, attentively listens to their thoughts, problems, and wishes. Through her interactions, she discovered that many of them desired socks that weren’t too tight around the cuff, but were still easy to put on and take off. This pattern has been graded for seven sizes, and the instructions can be worked with any type of sock knitting needles: magic loop, 2 circular needles, or traditional or flexible DPNs. The pattern is available in English, German, and Japanese.
Crayons by DROPS design
Crayons is worked diagonally in garter stitch with stripes and domino squares. You alternate a solid colour with a self-striping colourway to get the gorgeous, multicoloured effect. The pullover is knit top down with a V-neck and A-line shape, almost to tunic-length. Crayons is available in six sizes, from a bust of 88 cm (34.5″) to 132 cm (52). The pattern comes in sixteen languages.
