Free Mohair Hat Knitting Patterns

I’ve created a roundup of some beautiful free mohair hat knitting patterns. Of course, you can always browse the massive archive of free patterns on Ravelry to find more free mohair hat knitting patterns. Many of these patterns are by established designers, so they shouldn’t have errors and should be well written. However, I have not tested them, so always check for errata to prevent future headaches!

Trying out a designer’s free pattern is a good way to get to know how the designer writes, so if you like his or her instructions and methods, you might feel more comfortable purchasing another pattern of theirs. Also, it is really easy to buy patterns on Ravelry!

Mohair is really trendy these days, whether held single, double, or with another strand of a different yarn. All of these hats and headband patterns use a single strand of mohair-silk yarn in one of these methods. Thankfully, a lot of the laceweight mohair-silk yarns can be interchangeable. This is a good thing, as they can vary a lot in price!

Leni by Isabell Kraemer

Leni is a casual hat, worked in the round from the folded brim to the top. Combining one strand of mohair lace and one strand of fingering weight merino results in a soft and sumptuous look, but any other yarn that gives you the right gauge will work just fine. The hat is started with a provisional cast on and some ribbing which is then hidden when the main body of the hat is worked. A small delicate band of texture comes next and adds just the right amount of interest. An optional pompom is worked last.

Town Hat & Fingerless Mittens by Claudia Quintanilla – EweKnit Toronto

This densely knit fuzzy hat and fingerless mitt set is designed to keep the chill out, while still being light weight and stylish for both men and women. It uses one strand of laceweight mohair-silk yarn held double with a DK-weight merino-alpaca blend yarn. The Town Hat also adds some stranded colourwork for extra warmth and visual interest.

Seathwaite by Kate Gagnon Osborn

Unlike the other hat patterns listed, this hat uses a yarn that has mohair blended in. The yarn called for is a worsted weight blend that includes merino, masham, and mohair. This yarn will be soft, have some drape, as well as a soft, fuzzy halo. I’m sure you could also use one strand of DK weight merino yarn held double with a strand of laceweight mohair-silk yarn for a similar effect.

This is not a hat, but a headband! The Snow Drop headband is a pattern with a pretty motif. It is knit flat using slipped stitches to create the appearance of cables. That pattern is available in French and English. The headband uses one strand of fingering merino yarn held double with one strand of laceweight mohair-silk yarn.

The Posy hat is worked in the round and includes both garter and brioche stitch sections. This hat uses up yarn remnants from the Posy Shawl, also by AbbyeKnits. However, you can mix and match other yarn scraps from your stash. Try playing with colour on this one!

Twistmas is a fun and easy hat pattern featuring twisted rib throughout. The simple stitch pattern creates interesting texture while allowing your beautiful hand-dyed yarns to take center stage. It’s knit with two strands of fingering weight yarn and one strand of a laceweight mohair blend – all held together. Instructions for two versions of the hat are provided – the first one uses one colour for the whole hat while the second one invites you to use your scraps and mini-skeins to create your own “faded” version! The hat pattern is available in English and French.

Braid Me Knot by DROPS design

The Braid Me Knot hat calls for one strand of DK weight merino yarn held double with one strand of laceweight mohair-silk yarn. The luxuriously soft cables remind me of billowing folds of whipped cream! Like most DROPS Design patterns, this pattern is available in sixteen languages.
